Click on the image to see the next page, Design for the cover of the book “Bibliotopia”, published 2005 by Godine. This is the way I wanted the cover to look; the printed piece looks a lot different. The book contains information about various books, authors, and publishers. It also contains 8 portraits of literary figures, by me. Reviewers ignored it. My design was based on a leather-tooled binding of the 18th century. If I’d supervised the production of design, I’d have wanted a thick paper that could be impressed with a die, to suggest that gold areas were stamped deeply into the surface. I know nothing about the craft of bookbinding, but I can design an attractive cover, thanks to the great digital tools that are now on everyone’s desktop. I used Adobe Illustrator to construct the frames; Adobe Photoshop to add the various textures. |
