The drawing to the left was published in the City Journal, a magazine for and of New York City. The Journal commissioned the Scottish sculptor, Alexander Stoddart, to design a memorial for the Twin Towers, and the drawing shows his idea. The allegorical figures represent Fame and Rememberance. By way of critique, two obsevations:

1. Stoddart's figures stand together and yet they are apart. I'm troubled by the empty space between them. Classical art depends on precedent; but I don't think there is proper precedent for what Stoddart's proposing.

2.Allegorical figures are hard to take: we're accustomed to Lady Liberty in New York harbor; but I'm not sure we're ready for Lady Fame and Lady Rememberance.

In spite of these reservations I feel that Stoddart and the City Journal deserve praise for their efforts, which could be developed and enhanced. As a starting point they are excellent. It's a mystery to me that there haven't been many similar efforts. If anyone out there in Cyberspace would like to share his idea on this site, please contact me; I would love to see your idea and to add it to these pages, if it's not too outrageously awful.
